Sustainable Living: Tips for a Healthier Home Environment

Let’s Go Girls…

Ladies, let’s start by considering the air that we breathe daily in our own homes. Starting with our air filters. Is it time to get those filters switched out? You can get several disposable AC filters on Amazon for under $30.00. When our vents get overused, they allow extra dust and pollutants to enter our home. This is a simple fix that can prevent future health issues as well as keep the home clean.

Next, let’s consider what we can add to our home that will freshen the air as well as brighten the environment. Candles. Candles are truly the best when it comes to freshening the air and giving your home a cozier feel. The candles that I speak of are not the regular ones that you can get at Walmart or Hobby Lobby. I am talking about the candles made from beeswax with added essential oils. These will actually purify the air by releasing negative ions when burned. The negative Ions bind to positive ions such as dust, pollen, and mold, causing them to fall from the air. Some sites specifically sell this kind of candle, or you could pick up a new hobby and make it yourself!

Secondly, on adding to our domain. Plants are so fun and beautiful, but they also purify and oxygenate the air. If you were to get a cut from a plant and begin to grow it in a little vase, that plant will quickly be able to be potted and add life to your home. Having friends who love to garden makes this process easier; however, anyone can do this. Get some seeds, buy the plant, or find some friends, and let’s go girl.

Alright, let’s talk about subtracting. Cleaning our messes. Throw away what you don’t need. This is the beginning. It’s easier said than done, but once it IS done, the relief that you will feel will be so worth the process of organization. Throw out the literal trash, wipe the counters, clean those dishes, and finally organize each room at a time. Consistency is key. Do not pressure yourself to complete everything in a strict amount of time. Create a list and make a simple goal for each day or each week.

All in all, if we are unable to enjoy life in our homes due to our own mess, it is time to get up and address that problem. Women are the greatest multitaskers and planners that God has made, so let’s put our talents to use in creating a clean/healthy home environment for ourselves and the people we are blessed to do life with.
